Custom-ordered natural stone is a wonderful and sustainable building material that provides many benefits, and depending on the project it can be the most efficient natural coating for your structures. In previous posts, we have talked about its characteristics and properties, but today we will focus on a few of its many advantages both in new construction and in renovation and rehabilitation projects as well.

Natural stone is one of the most sustainable construction materials around, which means that if you are working on a remodel or rehab project, you can take any natural stone in the structure and with the right expertise, recycle into a brand new project.

Built-in Insulation

One of the most outstanding characteristics of natural stone is that, due to its large mass, it has a high degree of thermal inertia, which makes it an excellent insulator that can provide significant savings in heating and cooling costs throughout your house.

Natural stone allows for a multitude of applications in all types of projects: it is perfectly adaptable both to interiors and exteriors and can be installed on walls and facades, cabinets and floors of bathrooms, and on kitchen countertops and finishes.

Few building materials can offer as much variety in terms of aesthetic choices as natural stone, which makes it the perfect option for any environment and space. A rich array of tones and colours, as well as surface finishes, give engineered natural stone an air of exclusivity since no stone is equal to another.

If you are looking to incorporate natural stone into your next kitchen or bathroom project make sure to give Made in Stone Australia a try. We offer dozens of natural stone products from the industry’s leading brands such as Caesarstone, Dekton, Laminam, Quantum Quartz, Silestone, and Smartstone. What to look for when buying natural stone

What to look for when buying natural stone

Natural Stone has been used as a construction material since time immemorial. The use of natural stone in construction and design offers a plethora of benefits that makes it worthy of consideration even in this age of engineered super materials.

But with so many options, choosing which natural stone to use for your next project can be a tedious process; which is why we have decided to make the decision a little less fretful.

What characteristics should be considered?

Appearance: Basalt is different to Limestone, and Marble is different from Granite. Each stone has a particular appearance that makes them suitable for various projects. Try to visualise your completed project and picture what it will look like with different stones before committing.

Structure: The best natural stone should have a uniform internal composition, free of fissures and pockets of soft material. If you can spot stratifications with the naked eye, chances are the stone is not structurally sound.

Weight: A stone’s weight is indicative of many things, not the least of which is its suitability to a given project. Remember, denser material will be heavier but much more resistant to wear over time.

Hardness: This characteristic is fundamental, and especially so if you are going to use the stone on floors, pavements, and driveways. It is determined by the Mohs scale and the higher on the scale you find a particular stone, the harder and stronger it will be.

Porosity: Porosity is important for various reasons. A stone’s porosity will depend on its mineral content and inner structure. Overlooking this characteristic can run you into trouble, for example, because a highly porous stone can easily crack under a sudden freeze because of all the water it has absorbed over time.

Benchtop – Why Silestone is a good option

Benchtop – Why Silestone is a good option

The world of kitchen design is highly susceptible to changing tendencies and style trends; modern day kitchens run the gamut from country farm house styles to old-world traditional to contemporary modernism to Mediterranean cottage charm. However, one element that manages to remain consistent throughout is the stone benchtop.

Going with a stone countertop for the kitchen affords homeowners a variety of benefits and virtually zero downsides. Nevertheless, the market is crowded with options and, as such, choosing what type of stone to use can be difficult; which is why today we will briefly discuss the most important qualities to look for in a brand new kitchen countertop, and why Silestone is most definitely a solid contender.

Stain resistance

Kitchens are rife with substances that can permanently stain the benchtops. Drinks like red wine or coffee can do a number on stone, so the first quality you want your new stone benchtop to have is stain resistance. Silestone benchtops have nonporous surfaces which means whatever you spill will have a tough time penetrating it. Unless you go with a stain resistant benchtop, you will never be able to relax in your own kitchen.

You want to make sure that whatever material you choose, it is durable. There are plenty of brittle stones out there and they will chip or crack the first time you drop a massive meat tenderiser mallet on them. Silestone is an excellent option because it is made with hard quartz. Remember that installing a kitchen benchtop should be a one-time investment.

Easy to clean and maintain

Most of us spend an inordinate amount of time in the kitchen. In fact, if you are anything like me, you probably spend more time in your kitchen than any other room in the house. Look for a countertop material that is easy to clean. With Silestone quartz countertops you get a surface that can be wiped clean in the blink of an eye, so you can spend more time cooking and less time fuzzing about the clean up.

Add style to your kitchen with Smartstone

Add style to your kitchen with Smartstone

The modern kitchen is perhaps the most important meeting point of the home. While there are other rooms in the house in which we meet to share in familial activities or conversation, the truth of the matter is that nothing brings us closer to each other than sharing food. Whether it’s a simple afternoon snack or a Sunday night meal, the time we spent in the kitchen is usually filled with joy and moments worthy of memory.

Therefore, the design of any modern day kitchen is important, and it must be approached with great care and detail. Thankfully, creating a space for your family that is elegant, modern, beautiful, and functional is not as hard as you are probably thinking.

Here are a few tips to help you with designing and forming ideas for your future kitchen:

  • Include a kitchen island: The kitchen island is a staple of modern kitchen design. A stylish addition to any kitchen, the island can help you play with interesting flows in the room. Adding some benches or high-chairs will help you make your island into a convenient breakfast bar. Topping your kitchen island with high-quality quartz such as Smartstone is another way with which to increase your kitchen’s style and functionality.
  • Embrace open shelving: Modern design trends have begun adopting open shelving. Open shelving adds elegance and provides a subtle method to create space, so if your home’s kitchen is on the smaller side, you should seriously consider installing open shelves. Another advantage of installing open shelves is that decorating becomes extremely easy, merely including small potted plants into the nooks and crannies of your kitchen will go a long way in establishing a style.
  • Add colour: The wrong colour, or too much of it, can completely ruin your modern design, so if you are looking to add a splash of stylish colour we recommend installing engineered stone countertops. These types of high-quality products, such as Smartstone, can provide your kitchen with a fantastic array of palette options such as clean whites, creamy beiges, khaki greens, earthy browns and many other colours.

What is the Best Material for Kitchen Benchtops

By News

What is the best material for Kitchen Benchtops?

Setting the right tone for your kitchen is challenging. Whether you are planning to build a new house or maybe thinking of renovating your kitchen, you always want the best outcome. It is not the same as buying stuff and replacing it anytime you want. Determining the right countertops is one of the most important decisions you should consider in your house especially for your kitchen.

Natural Stone Kitchen Benchtops

  • Granite – is composed of mainly quartz, feldspar and other minerals. It conveys an aesthetic beauty to your kitchen. Aside from its beauty and high quality as countertops, granite is a hard substance and it is not easily prone to scratches. However, granite has also a weakness. Upon the installation of your kitchen benchtops, if it was not sealed properly, stains may appear and bacteria may enter. It might be impossible to remove, causing damage to your kitchen benchtops.

  • Marble – is also a great choice for countertops since it also delivers high-quality standards for your kitchen benchtops. It is known for its patterns being larger than granite. When it comes to its durability, it is quite durable but not same as granite. If not properly sealed, kitchen accidents such as spills may damage your countertops. It is also moderate to high maintenance.
  • Onyx – If you’re looking for something new, rare and unique, then you should try onyx for the countertops in your kitchen. It will give you a positive beauty for your kitchen and bathroom. However, there is something to consider. Onyx is not as durable as other countertops. It is a bit fragile. The maintenance is also a serious issue and it’s quite expensive. However, if you’re up to the challenge, then you should choose onyx.

  •  Travertine  – is known for its luxurious look and is therefore considered a “chic” choice by many. Also, it is environmentally friendly and economical. However, if you have a very busy kitchen then a travertine installation is not advisable. It is very reactive to acidic solvents such as juice and coffee. Minor spills can create stains which are very hard to remove.

Engineered Stone/Quartz Benchtops for your Kitchen

Engineered stone is a man-made composition of quartz and resin. It delivers aesthetic beauty to your kitchen and is generally cheaper than natural stones such as granite and marble.

  • Silestone – is the premium choice for kitchen benchtops, bathrooms, floors and wall cladding. It is a compound which is made of 90% natural quartz, giving it incredible strength, versatility and resilience.

  •  Smartstone –  is manufactured with a minimum of 93% quartz, combined with pigments and resins which make the surface highly durable. Just like any other quartz countertops, it is also important to be careful in putting hot pressure on its surface.

Choosing a kitchen benchtop requires time and effort in order to achieve the kitchen ideas you have been planning. It is important to take note of the aforementioned factors before purchasing one. It is also wise to choose the countertops that will suit your ideal budget and standards you have already set to avoid additional expenses that may occur in the future.

These characteristics combine to create an ideal surface for kitchen countertops, bathrooms, flooring and wall siding.

Quartz stone is a natural stone. It is one of the hardest materials used in the manufacturing of countertops. Aside from excellent durability, Silestone countertops are also scratch and scorch proof, therefore they will prevent average kitchen and bathroom accidents.

Counter balancing your kitchen with natural stone benchtops

By Kitchen Benchtops, News

Why Natural Stone?

For years, many architects and kitchen designers steered their clients away from natural stone benchtops such as marble, limestone and soapstone because of their porous, fragile nature, but people have eased up in their attitudes about having a perfect kitchen. After some years of use, kitchen benchtops can start to have nicks along their edges where someone has accidentally banged a heavy pot or had their share of stains, particularly under the coffee maker. But neither scrape nor spot should bother you! They are evidence of time well spent, food made and enjoyed.

What’s involved in maintenance?

Most natural-stone benchtops should be sealed using a clear liquid silicone that can be bought at a hardware store. Sealing does not make the stone stain-proof, but it makes it more stain-resistant. Your fabricator typically seals the stone before it is delivered and installed, and then it’s sealed again after installation. It is recommended that you reseal your benchtops about once or twice a year depending on how much you use your kitchen. Soapstone and slate should be oiled with mineral oil several times a year, which will help them resist staining. You will know your benchtops are sealed and/or oiled properly when water beads on the surface.

The key to keeping your natural-stone benchtops looking their best is simple: Clean up spills as soon as you see them. The longer you let red wine, coffee, lemon juice, cranberry juice or salad dressing sit on your counter, the more it will penetrate and leave a stain. If you do end up with a stain (like coffee-stained marble), chances are it can be removed. The Natural Stone Institute lists solutions to many common stains. (You may be able to get rid of coffee stains by mixing a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in water with a few drops of ammonia and then applying it to the stain with a clean white rag.) Sometimes, however, a stain is bad enough that you need to call in the professionals. In some cases, stains may not come out totally, but you can usually make them less noticeable.

Quantum Quartz – The quintessential surface that defines quality

By NewsNo Comments

What is Quantum Quartz?

Quantum Quartz is a composite of natural minerals and rocks – made up of 93% natural quartz bound with resin, pigments and other fillers. It can be used in a variety of domestic and commercial interior applications including kitchen and vanity tops, flooring, wall cladding, furniture, and many more. It is also an amazing surface which can really help elevate your room to a new level of quality.

What makes Quantum Quartz special?

Fillers, Resins & Additives

For Quartz based engineered stone, Quartz chips are used as the major filler. In addition coloured glass, oyster shells and metal are used to enhance the surface features of the stone. The proportion of Quartz used varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. It is generally made using a combination of 93% Quartz, with 7% of resin, recycled coloured glass, oyster shells, colours and binders.

Resins are used in many high‐strength demanding applications. The type of resin that is used in engineered stone can also differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some use epoxies or polyesters as well as other proprietary resins. Engineered stone products made with these resins are generally not considered to be thermoformable. Made in Stone’s quantum quartz products contain only the highest quality resins to bring out the very best result and ensure a quality surface every time.

Quartz-based engineered products contain numerous additives. These include pigments, but also a host of additives that improve or enhance chemical and performance properties: UV absorbers, cross‐linking agents, stabilisers, and the list goes on. Here at Made in Stone, we always strive to improve upon and implement the latest technologies in our stone.

Every year we are constantly finding ways to improve our products and one such improvement is an important additive which all Engineered stone share, a catalyst. This is the chemical, usually a peroxide, which causes the mixture to harden or cure the surface. We constantly strive to ensure that our catalyst is the perfect mixture and constantly seek new ways to improve on it so we can make our Quantum Quartz surfaces the very best they can be.

Casting, Curing & Colour

The way a solid surface is “cast” is generally a simple one. The resin is mixed with the additives and fillers and then poured into a mould, usually open, sometimes closed (usually closed for shaped products). It is important that no air bubbles are entrapped in the mix, as this would result in voids in the material. This is accomplished in different ways, from simple adjusting of the viscosity of the mix to vibrating casting tables and other more exotic methods.

Curing means allowing the chemical reactions that form the Engineered Stone product to be as close to 100% complete as possible, leaving a stable, inert material with all its performance properties intact. Some Engineered Stones cure by themselves in the open air. Others cure by being bathed in steam or heated in ovens. Many polyester resins require “post‐curing” operations, usually a heating‐cooling cycle which increases the degree of cure. As part of our constant drive for quality, we take curing our stone very seriously and ensure that the utmost care has gone into each and every one of our Quantum Quartz products.

Quantum Quartz comes in a variety of colours. Choose a colour that will compliment your décor. A slight colour variation may occur from batch to batch due to the location from which the natural material is quarried. Also, due to the natural quartz composition of Engineered Stone, irregularities such as spots or colour particles in the slab may occur.

Abrasion, Stain & Chemical Resistance

ASTM C‐241 tests the wearing resistance capacity of natural stones, ceramic and porcelain materials to the abrasion of foot traffic. Results of 10 qualify the material for normal traffic areas; 12 are required to pass for commercial floors, stair steps and platforms subject to heavy traffic. Quantum Quartz has an abrasive hardness of 60.

The capacity of commonly used tiles to resist the abrasion made by dragging heavy objects of different materials is evaluated using Abrasive Wearing Index Tests. The most common results are natural clay ceramic tiles 35 or more and porcelain tiles 100 or more. Quantum Quartz has an abrasion‐wearing index of more than 175 or about double than porcelain tiles.

Quantum Quartz is highly resistant to stains. Common spills that stay on the surface are easy to clean with regular cleaners. It has no trace of stain on the surface as tested per ASTM C‐650. The inert properties of its natural components (quartz, silica and or granite) together with its fabrication process make polished and semi‐gloss finished. These made a quantum quartz more resistant to stains than any other competitive material.

Quantum Quartz is an ideal product for applications where chemicals and/or strong cleaning agents are used. In addition, it is virtually non‐porous; hence, it is impervious to most concentrated solutions of industrial chemicals.

Listed below are industrial chemicals for which Quantum Quartz has been tested.
